I recently had a conversation with a friend in which I asked her whether or not she was happy. She then told me that she was no longer counting down the days to a happier life, because she was living it. Her answer hit me. It made me realize that we often spend our days waiting. Waiting for the perfect job, the next holiday, the bigger house, or the skinny jeans.
We sometimes get so caught up in thinking about the future (or the past) that we forget to make the most of the present moment.
Looking forward to long-term goals is not bad. But the problem arises when we pause our lives while in the process of waiting for a better one. Wouldn’t it be great if instead of waiting for “x” thing to happen, we could start enjoying life right now? The house, the job, the partner, or the trip shouldn’t be the key to being happy or complete, but rather a complement of the happiness that already exists in our life.
Or as Abraham Hicks puts it:
“Your life is right now! It’s not later! It’s not in that time of retirement. It’s not when the lover gets here. It’s not when you’ve moved into the new house. It’s not when you get the better job. Your life is right now. It will always be right now. You might as well decide to start enjoying your life right now, because it’s not ever going to get better than right now-until it gets better right now!”
One way to stop waiting is to start having more fun. This is something I’m still learning to do. I often set big goals for myself, and I don’t stop until I achieve them. This makes me turn down invitations, skip walks in the park, or miss out on time with my loved ones. But I recently realized that when I’m having fun, I’m all the way in the vortex (Abraham Hick’s term for alignment to Source energy). And the more fun I permit myself to have, the more good things I attract into my life.
I still look forward to the big goals, the ones that take a little more time to happen, but I’m also making sure to enjoy my “waiting time.”
Just imagine how boring it would be if you were in a 14-hour flight, and you forgot to bring something to do. Unless you prefer sleeping for the entire flight, wouldn’t it be better if you could read your favorite book or play your favorite game while waiting to get to your destination?
Feeling good doesn’t always just happen. We have to make it happen. We have to make space for it in our suitcase so that we can enjoy the flight.
This is how I plan to enjoy the flight. I’ll be using a special calendar just for the purpose of scheduling fun, and I would love it if you could join me. Scheduling fun activities is like a fresh breeze in our routine lives.
These are some fun things I’ve planned for this month.
Here are some prompts to help you fill out your fun calendar:
– Go to a place you’ve always wanted to visit.
– Meet up with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time.
– Try a new recipe.
– Have a night out with your partner.
– Host or surf someone’s couch.
– Meet locals through Meetup.
– Organize a potluck/cooking club.
– Book a spa day.
– Go on a day/weekend trip.
– Have a picnic in the park.
– Hike a mountain.
– Rent a car.
– Train for a marathon.
– Go to a concert.
– Learn a new language.
– Travel by train.
– Explore your own city, or travel to a new one.
– Go to a new café/restaurant.
Don’t forget to write down your ideas. And remember, if it’s not scheduled, it doesn’t exist.
It’s time to stop waiting, and to start having fun!
