The Law of Attraction: Act As If

When I was in college, a friend of mine recommended that I read the book The Secret. It was then that I first heard about the law of attraction. At the time, the idea of thoughts becoming things wasn’t so remote to me, because in the past, everything I had achieved had started in my mind with a single thought.

However, I decided I wanted to know even more about the law of attraction. It was then that I started to follow some teachers including Mike Dooley, Louise Hay, and Esther Hicks, to name a few. I learned that focusing on positive thoughts can bring positive experiences, also known as manifestations.

One of the main lessons I gained by reading The Secret was that in order to manifest our deepest desires, we have to act as if they have already come true. “Acting as if” is about believing in something that doesn’t currently exist. This can look like different things in different situations. For example, if you want to manifest more money, going out for lunch with a friend shouldn’t be a problem because you believe that the universe is always providing for you, and that you can afford it. Or if you want to be healthier, you start doing things healthy people do, like eating healthy, exercising, traveling, or hiking. This is the trickiest part for many, and some consider it to be a waste of time. This is because they don’t believe in the power of their thoughts (and actions).

Let me tell you about my very first manifestation story. It all started with a university raffle. I chose to participate, as among the prizes were a scholarship to study abroad, textbooks, and other educational stuff. The day before the event, I remember saying to myself, “I am going to wear something nice, because when they say my name, and as I walk to claim my prize, all eyes will be on me.” So the day of the raffle came, and I wore my best clothes. The event took place in the auditorium, and everybody was there. They had the names of the participants written on small papers, and when they were about to draw the first winner, I could already hear in my mind “Our first winner is Jessica Araus.” And guess whose name they called? Mine! The moment I chose to wear something special for this occasion was the moment I acted as if.

This story might sound silly, or you might think it was just pure coincidence. But for me, it was the result of the thoughts I put in my mind and the act of choosing my best clothes. There have been other manifestation stories in my life, but this was the very first one that I experienced shortly after reading The Secret, and I wanted to share it with you. I hope it will serve you as a reminder that thoughts become things.

Just think about it. How many good things have you manifested when you have had negative thoughts? When you are worried or stressed, do you feel connected to the source/universe? I am guessing the answer is no. We ask ourselves many times, what I am doing wrong? instead of asking what’s going well?

When we worry about money, we are sending the sign of lack to the universe. The days I don’t worry about money are the days I wake up to a bunch of orders in my webshop. When I think of lack, I attract more lack. When I think of disease, I attract more disease. Worrying takes us away from our vision. It creates a low vibration around us. Whether you choose to focus on the positive or focus on the negative, the energy invested is exactly the same. So why not choose the positive?

  2. Love this post and I totally agree. I have struggled with it though. Acting as if I were already healthy has led me to push my body in ways that weren’t yet sustainable. Having said that, continuously telling myself the story of how I am getting better and better has definitely helped me feel better and I am in a much better place now physically. I just need to keep reminding myself that the acting as if can be small. Just enough to get yourself to feel you’re moving in the direction of it. Much love and let’s keep acting. ❀️

    1. Yes, acting as if when having a physical ailment can be challenging, as the pain is difficult to ignore. But we can pretend to act as if everything is getting better, little by little. Doing smalls acts like you said. Eventually you will be able to feel it part of your truth.   3. Our brain is definitely powerful. I believe that good things happen once you start believing.
    Totally out of topic but somewhat relevant.. the only reason why superstitious beliefs are become real is because of our brain and we are already acting as if we are cursed or in bad luck.

  4. Jess, this is the first time I read one of your articles. Thanks for reminding me the importance of “acting if”. This morning I felt a bit down and was acting if as things weren’t good in my life and what happened next? Yeap! Got more of the same… reading your article was a wake up call . Thanks for taking the time to share your lessons! You might want to read a book by an extraordinary Aussie woman who is the biggest “manifester” I know. Her name is Denise Duffield Thomas and her book is called “Lucky Bitch” BTw, she’s an ex B schooler. Look her up on FB, she’s all about money manifesting.
